[Towers] was created by Tsai Ken after he returned from his travel to Tibet. Implying towers of energy, the title of this work owes its inspiration to the energy manifested in the Tibetan religious belief. It took Tsai an entire year to complete this work. In order to visualize “power,” he wrapped the stones with wire, but found it unsatisfactory. Then he applied wood charcoal over them since wood charcoal per se is a form of energy. Finally, he placed a number of feathers on top of the work, giving it a touch of lightness. This work is “physically heavy” without a “sense of oppression,” which embodied Tsai’s epiphany of life.
