[Realm of Contentment] (1997) is an enigmatic still-life painting. In this work, every stroke of Cheung’s brush bears his signature, characterized by items implying Chinese culture, an ancient book with an unintelligible title, and a dice insinuating gambling. Besides, all these items appear spotlessly in a rigorous layout on a borderless tabletop that is dark yet glossy and clean enough to reflect the shapes of these items. Connections with our world notwithstanding, their postures are so detached from it.
