In [By a Hair’s Breadth] (2009), two midget firefighters walk on customized stilts and carry a victim with Down Syndrome in tandem, trying to rescue the victim from the scene of a fire. White-faced and heavily rouged, the three figures coincidentally wear an enigmatic smile on their faces, sending a shiver down the viewer’s spine. Their performance is considered anachronism, and bears Wu’s unique signature of “phony” mannerism. It is exactly why these individuals with special needs can wander amidst the real and the virtual, and embody the reversal effect that the artist seeks to bring about.
