The creativity of the Never Relax Morning or Night (2008) came from a reflection of life experience. Over the past few years, I have seen that the rich people in the eastern district of Taipei held big funerals for love ones they had lost. To demonstrate their wealth, they usually hired a big “Si Suo Mi” (funeral band). Therefore, a typical funeral procession may look like a parade, starting with a full-size marching band playing traditional Chinese songs and banging cymbals. As is known, military marching bands used to play in celebration of National Day. Yet, as you can see from my works of art, the“Si Suo Mi” mimicked the military marching band on purpose, looking very strange and ridiculous.
The term “Never Relax Morning or Night” (夙夜匪懈), which means one country’s leader encourages his fellow citizens to work hard from dawn till dusk, is derived from the national anthem of the Republic of China.
