In the work [Reunion] (2013), the figures and images still follow Cheung’s consistent notions of costume, camouflage, and detachment from secularism. This work features that the artist and his partner meet in heaven after they respectively made good karma from practice and reincarnated as immortals.
The figure on the left wears a brown kasaya beneath a billowing red robe and holds a Daoist whisk in his right hand. Between the thumb and index finger of his left hand hangs a blue japamala as a necklace. He fixes his smiley, affectionate gaze on the artist dressed as a white-haired immortal on the right. The artist dressed as an immortal also holds a Daoist whisk in his right hand, with a golden skull propped on his left hand. The artist replies his partner’s gaze with unbridled joy. Their reunion takes place above the clouds, in an undisturbed paradise. Therefore, their encounter has a happy ending in the artist’s depiction, which is manifested in the red, green, and gray ruyi scepters floating between the two figures.
