In the work [Ego-Being L, Ego-Being R] (2011), the artist per se appears in the composition in three different roles and temporal dimensions. That is, the painting artist gazes at himself naked for the sake of art, while the third “self” of the artist is shrouded in what seems like the mist of time. The items surrounding them include a crystal ball, a wooden puppet, a golden mask, a pale crescent moon, and the red liquid in a porcelain bowl that frequently appear in the artist’s oeuvre. These highly evocative items are applied for inspiring the viewer’s imagination, outlining, and speculation. Cheung’s paintings not only recount his own stories. The viewers can interpret them into one story after another as well.
