This solo exhibition features Yang Chih-Fu’s single art series Dust.

The composition of each piece in this series is created by enlarging, rotating and re-projecting part of Substratum and Completion, which seems analogous to transplanting a randomly selected crop from an arable farm to another on which a new variety is ergo cultivated.

Derived from part of Substratum and Completion though, the new images in the art series Dust still demonstrate the potential for mutation that goes beyond the status of reproduction, prosthesis or doppelgänger. For instance, in the process of re-projection, inexplicable light spots lie scattered over the images due to the timeworn projector. The artist retains these light spots even though they do not belong to the original images. Just like the mutation that ensures the survival of different species, these light spots may represent a new breakthrough and another form of dust in this series. The artist titled this art series Dust, giving it the connotation that the pollen spreading out with the breath of life as well as looking for companions and groups.

Since the composition of “Dust” has been formally defined, the artist turned to play with colors and produced four subseries, including Late Night Temperature, Misty Grass Mountain, Colored Negatives, and Vintage Matchboxes. The four subseries collectively reflect the artist’s personal life experiences and epiphanies.
