After having resided in France for years, Chan Kin Chung finally chose to settle down in Guangzhou, China. His oeuvre is a beguiling mixture of occidental oil painting style and oriental humanistic spirit, which can be divided into the “Composition Series” in the early stage of his career and the “Landscape Series” in the late.
[Composition 5-83] is a piece of Chan’s “Composition Series” created in the early stage of his career.
Chan’s “Composition Series” features doors, windows, walls, timber, fences and climbing plants on them as its subject matters. The artist’s systematic observation and rumination transmuted these seemingly ordinary, inconspicuous objects into realistic forms, insofar as if time eternally solidifies on the canvas. In this series, he experimented with multifarious compositions, which not only manifests his spirit of research in painting, but also proves his discerning eye for view selection.
Chan shows a high level of competence in realistic techniques, and displays his real ingenuity in adding a touch of serenity to his oeuvre. Accordingly, despite the stark contrast in color and the bright hues, his brushstrokes and compositions always provide a peaceful and calm atmosphere. The artist’s life experiences thus find expression in such an air of tranquility.
