The “18 LOHAN” series is the product of Kuo’s observation on Taiwanese society, with a particular focus on people from different walks of life who strive against the elements.
The term cleansing, by definition, signals physical or mental rinsing, and, by extension, implies washing away one’s sins. The figure in [Cleansing] stands naked in water, wiping his body clean. The swimming fish bears testimony to the limpidness of the river. Although the artist is not committed to the lofty ideal of growing out of the mud unsullied, he still struggles to address the following questions. Under the present political, media, commercial and technological influences, can we settle down in Taiwanese society and get on our pursuit of self-value? Can we protect ourselves from external disturbance and remain principled and incorruptible, or strike a delicate balance and properly conduct ourselves in the increasingly threatening social structure?
