J. C. Kuo is known for his visual vocabulary and creative style featuring black, thick and imposing contour lines. The embedment of objects (e.g. embroideries of jewels, badges or printed fabric) in the composition and the frame carrying his distinctive signature are also part of his oeuvre’s charm.
J. C. Kuo tends to appraise and satirize figures of different times by dint of his works. He not only discloses the current state of the society, but also interprets and cogitates on various social issues. [Mr. X and Miss Y] is a crucial piece of Kuo’s prolific output. The whole image is a dead ringer for a masked invertebrate whose joints are so flexible that it can metamorphose as freely as possible. It may insinuate politicians who angle for fame and stage antics while abuse their power without suffering any setback, or mass media that talk nonsense and start rumors to cause sensations in a completely unscrupulous manner. A discursive space knowing no bounds thus unfolds with the wide-ranging implications carried by this work, which also embodies the artist’s witty observation on and investigation into the society.
