"Poetic Visuality: Chan Kin Chung Solo Exhibition" will be held at Main Trend Gallery, beginning on December 18, 2010, for a month-long exhibition of Chan’s works from 2005 to 2010. The exhibition focuses on Chan Kin Chung's realistic landscape paintings. Through these works, one can see the changes in his creative style over the past few years, such as differences in composition and brushwork due to his relocation and increasing age.

Chan Kin Chung was born in 1939 in Longchuan County, Guangdong Province, China, and later moved to Hong Kong. In 1970 he entered the National Superior of Fine Arts in Paris and settled. In 1975, with the support of the French Ministry of Culture, he held his first solo exhibition in Paris and became a professional painter.

Chan Kin Chung's painting style is known for its realistic landscapes. Before the 1980s, his works often depicted the ordinary aspects of life with a quiet atmosphere, such as broken doors, shattered windows, dilapidated walls, rusted stairs and pipes, roadside grass, and greenery in railings. His works leave a very simple and sober impression, revealing his state of mind. After the 1980s, his painting style shifted from urban life to the open countryside. In recent years, Chan Kin Chung has shown new ideas in composition and expression. The blocks of brushstrokes are slightly twisted and curved, giving a sense of movement to the dense foliage.

In Chan Kin Chung's paintings, one can feel the vastness of the wilderness and the return to the most basic and simple aspects of life through extremely delicate brush strokes. In addition, his paintings show his emphasis on light and shadow, and the light coming out of the darkness is like a beacon of hope in living. Furthermore, his works convey not only the vitality of life but the rhythm of music, composing one moving symphony after another, echoing, surging, and pausing.

Look over Chan Kin-Chung’s works, he transmits a vision rather than just a thing seen, an atmosphere rather than a reality.

Jacques Leenhardt, Art Critic

Solemnly quiet, gracefully subdued, serenely deep, and mysterious; this is how Chan Kin-Chung’s oeuvre seems in style. His inimitable demeanor and aesthetic character find expression in his landscape paintings as well.

Xia Shuo-Qi(夏碩琦), Art Critic
